Western Chair Upholstery Class with Sierra @ The Rusted Roan Design Co.
Join Sierra Shores from the Rusted Roan Design Co. for a beginner western chair upholstery class. This class is great for students wanting to start or expand their upholstery skills with an emphasis on western design. It is limited to 6 students for higher quality instruction. This is a non-sewing western design upholstery class, noexperience necessary.
What is included in the class:
The use of upholstery tools, compressors, instruction for the three days, and
educational information.
The class will begin a 9am and go until 5pm each day, typically finishing earlier on
Sunday. Each day will include a one hour lunch break. All meals (Thursday evening through Monday morning) are provided in the workshop fee.
Prior to this beginner’s upholstery western weekend workshop, students must submit
for approval of a picture of the project they would like to work on. Choosing the right chair
reupholster will help you complete the project within the allotted time frame (3 days).
Please send pictures to Sierra by email at sierra@therustedroan.com.
Schedule
Thursday, October 10th- Check into Cross Bell Ranch anytime after 3pm. Dinner will be served around 6pm.
Friday, October 11th: Chair set up between 8:30 and 9 am. Introductions and getting
started on your project. Develop a plan for what you want to accomplish over the 3-day
workshop. Take notes, so you have a reference for future projects when you get home.
Become familiar with the process, tools and get started on your project and
upholstering. By the end of day one, spring systems/foundations are in place and the
seat of your chair is completed. The instruction day ends at 5pm.
Saturday, October 12th: Work on your project and continue to make progress. The seat and inside back
of your piece should be completed or close to completion.
Sunday, October 13th: You’ve made good progress. We will be working on outside backs and
decorative tacks. You should be finishing up your piece today.
Monday, October 14th: Check out of Cross Bell Ranch by 10am
What the student is responsible for:
Students will be responsible for their chair frame project, stuffing, fabric, and finishes (decorative tacks). Each student will bring their project (this must be approved before
the workshop). Some ideas for a project would be dining chairs, an occasional/side
chair, open arm chair, rocking chair, or an ottoman. Frames (new or vintage), foam,
custom western prints, western fabric, hair on hides, embossed leathers, and
additional finishes (decorative tacks, etc) are available for purchase separately prior to
the class start date. Please have your piece torn down to the bare frame prior to the
class and bring the old fabric and stuffing, old (and new-if needed) with you. You can
bring your own tools or upholstery tools are provided. If any frame repair or painting/
staining is to be done to your frame, this should be done before the workshop.
Once you’ve signed up, and your frame is approved, Sierra will email you with any more
details you’ll need to know before you attend the workshop. Feel free to contact
Sierra with questions: sierra@therustedroan.com or 530-487-1488
